Fareham-based PR expert Kevin Briscoe was asked to take part in a first for the industry nationally  – using social media to provide a live masterclass on how to win an award.

The “Twittinar” was organised by the Chartered Institute of Public Relations (CIPR) to help members complete their entries for the industry’s regional PRide Awards.

Mr Briscoe, who runs Briscoe PR at Sarisbury Green, has been a judge for the awards for the past three years and is also a past award-winner.

So he answered questions and queries from other public relations practitioners from across the Wessex region – Hampshire, Dorset and Wiltshire – during the one-hour live session using social media tool Twitter.

All the questions and responses were marked with a common hash-tag to distinguish them from the rest of the Twitter traffic.

The experiment was such a success that the CIPR is now considering running it again but opening it up to the whole country.

Mr Briscoe, who is also vice-chairman of the Wessex Region of the CIPR said: “Anyone who puts in for an award wonders what is going through the judges’ minds and what criteria they are using to make their decisions.

“I was delighted to be able to share the deliberations that go on during the judging process so that anyone putting in for the awards this year can make sure they target their entry appropriately.

“There were lots of really good questions and I hope that my answers will go some way to encouraging practitioners across the south to success in this year’s awards.”

The CIPR PRide Awards are held annually in all the regions in the UK and celebrate the work of the PR industry outside London. This year the awards entry deadline is fast approaching – July 18, although late entries will be accepted up to July 25 for an extra fee.

The award ceremony for the Wessex Region is due to be held in Southampton in November.
